"Ogni Magia" is a phrase in Italian which means “every magic”. Depending on context it can also mean “all magic”, “every spell”, or “everyone’s magic”. To me it also means “everywhere magic.”

I composed Ogni Magia while I was reading the book The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami. I was inspired by his version of “magical realism” — the world he creates has all the appearances of being ordinary, but right from the beginning of the book you know that it isn’t quite so, and as time passes some very strange and dark things begin to unfold. In this piece, I attempt to capture something of the surreal, magical mood of The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, rather than tell the story in music.

That said, there is one specific image from the novel that I try to portray. The protagonist Toru spends some time hiding and meditating in the bottom of a well. Eventually he is squeezed through the wall of the well into a murky alternate reality, which is perhaps a metaphor for the core of his unconscious. The quiet-deep middle section of my piece is an attempt at portraying this image.
